  • Reporting to the Senior Director, State and Regional Policy, the Policy Program Director, Midwest will foster development of innovative clean energy and climate policies in the region, in states identified by the foundation as having high potential for achieving meaningful progress on clean energy and climate policy. As such, the Policy Program Director will play an influential role engaging policy experts, utilities, clean technology industries, policymakers, and nonprofits. Success for this position and for the region is policy progress toward an energy system that is clean, reliable, affordable, and safe.

  • Desired Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 10 years of energy policy experience
  • Power sector expertise preferred
  • Knowledge of state-level energy policy
  • Experience within the Midwest region highly desirable
  • Outstanding public speaking and writing skills
  • Understanding of political dynamics
  • Ability to strategize - synthesize information from multiple sources into a coherent, big-picture view
  • Ability to translate vision into action

    • Job Opportunity with Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan

      Position: Assistant Attorney General in the Environmental Enforcement Division, Chicago, IL


      The Illinois Attorney General plays a critical role in the enforcement of civil environmental laws. The Attorney General's primary role in environmental enforcement is handling enforcement actions referred to the Office by a number of state agencies, including the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and others. The Bureau also engages in outreach to community members to learn of potential violations of environmental laws that are endangering the health and well-being of families and communities. The Bureau works to stop pollution and ensure that polluters, not taxpayers, pay the cost of cleanup.
    • Salaries start at $57,000

    • Responsibilities:


    • Build and prosecute cases against environmental polluters

      • Job Opportunity with Sierra Club - Illinois Chapter

        Position: Clean Energy For All Program Advocate, Chicago, IL


        Under the direction of the Deputy Chapter Director, this role would be the lead advocate for Sierra Club efforts to move Illinois to 100% clean energy, particularly focused on strong and just implementation of Illinois’ new clean energy law - the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA). Collaborate with various internal departments and programs, partner organizations, and volunteer leadership to support strategic coordinated campaign work. When needed, represent the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.

      • Responsibilities:


      • Implement strategic campaign to move Illinois to 100% clean energy, working in collaboration with Illinois Chapter and National staff, as well as volunteer leadership, partner organizations, and the public
      • Advocate before state and local government and Illinois utilities
      • Represent Sierra Club at state coalition working group meetings
      • Support staff, volunteers, partners, and businesses in priority implementation areas to promote clean energy project development
      • Develop and maintain relationships with policymakers
      • Assist in representing Sierra Club's views to legislators, government agencies, administrative officials, clean energy businesses, news media, and the general public
      • Support and provide professional expertise to staff, volunteers, elected officials, and the general public
      • Assist in content development of educational/informational materials
      • Seek opportunities to advance the Sierra Club's diversity initiatives through new partnerships and engagement strategies where appropriate
      • Handle miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned

      • Desired Qualifications:


      • BA/BS degree in environmental, political, legal, or related field or equivalent experience and education
      • At least 3 years of experience in public policy advocacy, and implementation of campaigns
      • Strong knowledge of energy issues, including renewable energy and energy efficiency policy and programs
      • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability
      • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers
      • Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required
