The federal SolSmart program that helps towns become "solar-ready" will be offering a monthly SolSmart webinar series, starting with a webinar on Thursday, January 24, at 1 pm on best practices for solar planning and zoning in communities. If your municipality isn't already pursuing SolSmart certification (or even if they are!), you can share this great free solar learning opportunity with your town leaders!
This webinar will address best practices for including solar in land use plans and your community’s zoning ordinance. Learn about ways to provide maximum siting options for rooftop and ground mount solar projects while preserving your community's character and historic resources. Participants will learn how local governments can set solar development goals, address “solar-ready” concepts in their zoning ordinances, and capture benefits of solar development while minimizing risks. Attendees will come to understand the development standards they can use to ensure solar farm development creates agricultural, environmental, and water quality co-benefits. In addition, participants in the webinar will learn how solar can be included in local planning documents, such as comprehensive, functional, and small area plans. Finally, the webinar will provide a brief overview of SolSmart, a national designation and technical assistance program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. SolSmart promotes the use of best practices by local governments to ensure greater ease and affordability for residents and businesses to install and access solar energy. This webinar will count as training for SolSmart PZD-9 credit: Train planning staff on best practices in planning and zoning for solar PV.
