System Details and Green Efforts:

  • 1 KW - 4 Panel "Demonstration PV System"
  • Commissioned August 1, 2014
  • 1,242 KWH per year (estimated)
  • Suniva Optimus Series Monocrystalline 270W Panels
  • M250 Enphase MicroInverters
  • Enphase Envoy Communications Gateway
  • IronRidge Self-Grounding Racking System
  • TED Whole-House Monitoring System
  • Combined with home efficiency, should cover 15-20% of our annual electricity needs.
  • Also own a Ford Escape hybrid!

This system will help reduce my carbon footprint, but it also serves as a laboratory for myself and anyone who is interested in learning how PV works, how it's installed, what issues may arise and how to solve them.  Also, as others have stated, I just love to watch that meter spin backwards!

Personal Story:

I am an electrical engineer with a background in antenna theory and radio communications.

Many years ago I was diagnosed with Late Stage Neurological Lyme Disease.  Long story short, I slept for many years, and awoke to a different world. I realized that I needed to return to work and help move our community forward into a clean-energy future. I've started with my own carbon footprint.

Today I’m a licensed Professional Engineer and a NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional™.

I am here to help and I'm honored to be counted amongst this group of passionate solar ambassadors.

What tips do you have for someone considering or moving forward with a solar installation?

I would ask for a second review of your project, and try to locate NABCEP certified designers and installers.  NABCEP is a certification which ensures that your PV system installer understands how to safely and efficiently install PV systems.

Also... When you ask, "What is my return on investment."  I ask you, "What kind of return are you getting from your utility company now?"  The return is immediate - your home value increases, you contribute to the reduction of pollution (reduce your carbon footprint), you have a cool techy gadget to show off, your electric bill really does go down, and, most importantly, you are showing the children that you care about their future!
